CTA`S #4 COTTAGE GROVE BUSES RETURN TO MICHIGAN AVENUE ROUTING DOWNTOWN

02/11/00

CTA's #4 Cottage Grove buses, which have been detoured to State Street downtown since traffic on Michigan Avenue was limited by construction last May, will return to Michigan starting Wednesday, February 16.

The regular routing for #4 Cottage Grove buses is north on Cottage Grove from 95th to 35th, and then via King Drive and Cermak to Michigan. Northbound on Michigan, #4 buses make all stops to Randolph before turning east to a terminal on Columbus between Randolph and Lake. For trips south, the buses return to Michigan at South Water.

Since construction began in May, 1999, #4 Cottage Grove has been one of nine bus routes detoured off Michigan to State. #4 buses have been turning west from Michigan at Congress, and using State north to Wacker. The buses then go east on Wacker and south on Columbus to Randolph, where they make a U-turn and wait to start trips south. Outbound service uses the same detour in reverse.

#4 Cottage Grove buses are being returned to Michigan Avenue to reduce bus congestion on State Street, where six bus routes regularly operate in both directions during rush periods in addition to the nine being temporarily detoured. During the current phase of construction on Michigan, northbound buses do not stop between Adams and Randolph. Southbound buses do not stop between Randolph and Jackson.
